Visual communication can break down language and culture barriers (a picture is worth a thousand words). Just like bedside manners, it can be learned, and medical schools are increasingly teaching visual communication to the next generation of doctors.

The Editorial Graphics team at the Journal of the American Medical Association creates all of the medical, scientific, editorial, and patient education figures and visual abstracts published in the journal. Manager and senior medical illustrator Karen Bucher will walk through the pre- and post-acceptance decisions that go into figure development and creation as well as the impact that visuals have in bridging medical and scientific research and the clinical care of patients.

Communicating science to broad audiences can include a vast array of visual approaches. Ni-ka Ford will present on the variety of artistic practices she takes in medical illustration and the impact they have in academia and to the general public. Her talk will also highlight how medical illustration can bridge health literacy gaps and largely contribute to health equity.

Daughter of Dr. Frank H. Netter and author of “Medicine’s Michelangelo: The Life and Art of Frank H. Netter, MD

Frank Netter was both a doctor and artist whose genius was such that he not only grasped the most complex medical concepts, but made drawings to make those concepts clear to us. In thirteen atlases and over 200 pamphlets he single-handedly pictorialized the human anatomy and documented the medical advances of the 20th century. His award-winning Atlas of Human Anatomy is today in its 8th edition and the best selling anatomy atlas in the world.  
Francine Mary Netter is Dr. Netter’s daughter and author of Medicine’s Michelangelo, the life and art of Frank H. Netter, MD.  She will give us a personal introduction to the man behind the pictures.
